Gappier

Fill-in-the-gap with YouTube

Learn languages with
real content

Pick a YouTube video — a travel vlog, a tech talk, a news segment — and train your ear by filling in the gaps of its real subtitles.

  • English
  • Español
  • Français
  • Deutsch
  • Italiano
  • Português
  • Català

We give you the language. You pick the accent — the channel you follow decides whose voice your ear gets used to.

Why Gappier

Content you actually care about

No more scripted audio. Use vlogs, documentaries, podcasts, shows, or tech channels. The language real speakers use — not the textbook kind — with whatever accent they happen to have.

You type it, you don't just watch it

A gap waits for the word and the video keeps going. You cannot skim past what you failed to catch — that is the whole difference between watching with subtitles and actually practising.

What you miss comes back

Every word you get wrong lands in one review list, whether you missed it on the web or on YouTube through the extension. You reinforce it later on the web, each word in a sentence of its own.

Three steps. No excuses.

  1. Pick your video

Any YouTube video with subtitles in the language you want to learn. A show episode, a programming tutorial, a TED talk — your call.

  2. Choose your difficulty

Control what percentage of words get hidden. Easy and Medium are on the free plan; Hard and Expert come with Premium.

  3. Fill in the gaps

The video plays. You listen and type the missing words in sync with the audio.

Gappier in a browser: a YouTube video playing, and under it the subtitle line with several words replaced by blanks, one of them being typed.
The same exercise on a phone, with the keyboard open and the counters for gaps hit and missed at the top.
This is the exercise: the video plays, and you type the missing words as they come. Green is a hit, red is one you missed and get back later.

How much does Gappier cost?

There is a free plan with 20 new videos a month, Easy and Medium difficulties, and no card required. A video counts per language, and replaying one you have already played is free.

Do I need an account?

Yes — a free account with Google, so your progress, your history and the words you missed follow you across devices and between the web app and the Chrome extension.

Which languages can I learn?

English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Catalan. Every language is verified before we offer it, so the exercise always matches the audio.

What YouTube videos can I use?

Any video with subtitles in the language you want to learn. TED talks, news, cooking shows, tech tutorials, TV show clips — if it has subtitles, it works.
